Projected future changes

Projected future changes globally

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC projects global mean surface temperature to increase by 1.4 to 5.8 °C between 1990 and 2100. Precipitation is likely to increase over northern mid- and high latitudes in winter with more intense precipitation events over many areas.

Arctic Climate Impact Assessment ACIA projects a warming of 4-7 °C over the next 100 years and resulting major impacts inside the Arctic.

Projected future changes for Finland

The climate scenarios developed for Finland (FINSKEN) project a temperature increase of 1.8 – 5.2 °C up to the year 2050 and a precipitation increase of 4 – 28% relative to the period 1961 – 1990. The equivalent changes by the 2080s are 2.4 – 7.4 °C (temperature) and 6 – 37% (precipitation). Changes in the winter would be larger than changes in the summer.
